history

In the early 1930s, a road in Germany was paved with a mixture of very fine aggregate, asphalt binder and water. This application emerged as an unconventional approach to the maintenance of road surfaces, a new and promising technique, and marked the beginning of the development of Slurry Seal . Serious trials have begun all over the world in the last ten years. However, widespread application of Slurry Seal only developed in the 1960s; It has attracted real attention with the introduction of surfactants (emulsifiers) and machines capable of continuous spreading. Ongoing advances in mixing methods, emulsions and machinery have made Slurry Seal the modern-day choice for highly durable, low-cost coating and surface care. Now all over the world, Slurry Seal is widely used in many places, from promenades to highways, airports, parking lots and other covered surfaces. Because it is effective and economical , Slurry Seal is increasingly used in maintenance programs by government, local and federal agencies - including the military.

What is Slurry Seal?

Slurry Seal ; It is prepared by mixing aggregate, asphalt emulsion and fillers in quantities determined in laboratory studies. The mixture is made workable by adding water. Asphalt emulsion acts as an adhesive, holding the crushed aggregate together and the new slurry surface; It adheres to the old surface on which it is applied. Different emulsions and aggregates are used to meet the conditions, specifications and demands of each project. Aggregate must be clean, durable, broken, properly graded and uniform. Asphalt emulsion; It is a three-part system consisting of asphalt, water and emulsifier. Fillers and additives such as Portland cement, slaked lime or liquid aluminum sulfate are often used in small amounts as stabilizers or chemical modifiers.

How to Prepare Slurry Seal?

Slurry is made with specially designed tools. It is either truck-mounted or self-propelled. This vehicle carries sufficient amounts of materials that are continuously mixed in the mixer (pug mill). The use of these technologically advanced machines ensures a smooth and consistently uniform mixture. Slurry is done quickly and perfectly on the project site. Mixing and spreading are done in a single operation, and the road is reopened within a few hours.

How to Apply Slurry Seal?

Slurry Mortar is applied to the existing coating surface through the spreader box connected to the slurry mixing unit. Slurry mortar flows into the spreader box and the mortar is laid while the spreader-mixer box is pulled forward. The spreader box is capable of spreading slurry mixture across a traffic lane in a single pass. and is manufactured to ensure continuous contact with the existing surface. With this feature, the spreader box makes it possible to make a new coating of the same thickness and regularly even on sloping shoulders, extremely high parts of the surface, and in different superelevation situations. The automatic mixing process is constantly monitored by trained operators. Other personnel; He cleans the surface before the slurry application, closes the workplace to traffic, checks the suitability of the laying work, cleans the metal manhole covers after the application and completes the process of laying the slurry mortar in places where the spreading box cannot enter.

Slurry Seal Types

Emulsions of different composition and shear time are mixed with one of three aggregate types to make a slurry mixture with the desired properties. Aggregate is divided into three types: 1 fine, 2 general and 3 coarse. Type I Fine Aggregate: It is used for maximum crack penetration and closure in low density / low abrasion areas open to traffic. II. Type General Aggregate: The most commonly used. It is generally used in places with normal and heavy traffic. This type of mixtures are used for crack closure; It is used to prevent normal to serious peeling, oxidation and bond loss and to increase slip resistance. III. Type Thick Aggregate: It corrects serious surface defects, provides slip resistance in very heavy traffic loads and prevents hydroplanning. For almost every situation and need, the Slurry Seal mix can be specially designed to meet the most demanding requirements.

Why Use Slurry Seal?

  • It is the most versatile coating system available.

  • It is extremely economical.

  • It extends the life of the existing coating by protecting it from oxidation and degradation.

  • It provides a durable, dust-proof and vomit-proof surface suitable for all weather conditions.

  • It is ready for use a few hours after application.

  • It improves the slip resistance and usability of the road without causing loss of hazardous aggregate from the surface.

  • Fills cracks and gaps, providing black color and texture in a single pass.

  • Economical solution for protecting problematic coatings.

  • It can be applied to any coated surface, old or new, without rolling or priming.

Advantages of Using Slurry Seal

In addition to being a versatile coating method, slurry seal also fills cracks and voids on the surface in a single pass, leaving a durable bituminous mixture compatible with various textured surface requirements on the surface. It makes the surface impermeable to weather conditions. Provides color and texture detail.

Low Cost: It is economical in flooring and very cheap in use.

Fast Use: Easy and fast application of a new coat makes slurry especially attractive for busy roads, parking lots and airport runways. The new surface is ready for use within a few hours after application.

Preventing Problems: When applied on new coatings, slurry seal prevents surface deficiencies caused by weather conditions. Oxidation, loss of oils, loss of bonds and brittleness of the mixture are minimized. At the same time, it provides a special durability and surface texture that is not available in the existing coating.

Solving Problems: Defects such as surface cracks, spalling, bond loss, increased water and air permeability, slipperiness as a result of aggregate polishing or washing, which exist in older coatings, are corrected by slurry application. Waterproofing is also ensured, preventing further deterioration. A long-lasting surface is created that has high slip resistance and is safe for drivers to use, and is suitable for all weather conditions.

Aesthetic Value: With a single simple application, the coating has a new wear surface with a uniform black color and texture. This appearance means marketing potential to increase the value of the product and buyer acceptance. With roads repaired with slurry seal, shopping malls, parking lots and other public and commercial pavements look more striking and pleasing to the eye.

Benefits of Coating Maintenance

No surface is permanent. Even the best surfaces are subject to wear and tear from time, weather and traffic. With a planned coating maintenance program; Significant savings can be achieved in improvement expenses and your coatings will be healthier, more useful and safer. With this Program; At the same time, the excessive time required to repair deep cracks and gouges will be reduced or eliminated. Application of slurry seal; It will significantly increase the life of the existing coating by protecting it from damage caused by water infiltration into the subfloor. Improved surface performance is an added advantage. A pavement maintenance program using slurry seal will not only protect your pavement, but will also help protect your pavement investment. You will get the best Slurry Seal when you entrust your coating maintenance needs to the skilled hands of SEALAS.   You can be sure that you will receive protection.
